I haven't heard anything new for a while, and it's not like their Maui store is hurting for business. This old Advertiser article mentions a seven-year plan... meaning we could wait (or weight?) another three years at least.

Oddly enough, Krispy Kreme knows the demand, and ships big crates over to Honolulu now and then, usually to sell as part of a charity auction. Also, although I don't know if it's charity-related or not, there was a woman standing along Nimitz Highway fronting the Nimitz Center (home of AAA Hawaii, Eagle Cafe and Sensually Yours) just a couple of hours ago, waving down drivers with a sign promising $10 boxes of Krispy Kreme goodness.

I know the address was given, but that's not much help in finding it...

It's located right by Kahului airport, next to the Lexus dealership.
Coming out of the airport road you'll drive right by it. Look for the flashing red sign which signifies them taking fresh doughnuts out of the cooker.

Yes, I'm not sure who the contact is, but I've heard that Krispy Kreme does fundraisers on Oahu.

By the way, there was a bakery in the Aiea Shopping Center called Krispy Kreme, but it wasn't affiliated with the national chain. It was still good, though, and it offered one of the coolest things I've seen in a local bakery: hot dogs served in long-john buns. Yummy.

I, too, have heard that they're really nothing to write home about unless you get them fresh and warm, right out of the fryer.

Daaang, I'd pass up on the deed for a dozen of glazed KK do-nuts!!! My poor bradah who live on Maui, gotta bring over piles of KK do-nut boxes when he come visit us!

Speaking of fund raising, someone brought in a couple of boxes of Krispy Kreme to work today. I asked the person who brought in "so how come you went to Maui?". The answer was she didn't, they had setup at CompUSA on Wednesday morning to sell for Special Olympics.

Where's that Honolulu location going to be? I secretly hoped it would've been one of the little stores that was going to cling like a barnacle to the retail whale that is WalMart on Keeaumoku. Sadly, it was not to be.

I just spotted this great image on the HPR website. The caption explains:

Believe it or not, Maui News reporter Liz Janes-Brown handcarried a dozen fresh Krispy Kreme donuts from Maui to Honolulu and offered them for a True Believer pledge which was promptly grabbed by John Morgan, who was actually in his car and near the station at the time he heard the unusual offer. John made good on his pledge, and went off with his prize to wife Staci. For mainland web visits bewildered by this phenomenon, we should mention that Hawaii has only one Krispie Kreme donut shop, and it's in Kahului on Maui.
    Hmm. Fundraising opportunity?

I have to agree with Glen about eating them when it's old. The two times I got to taste them was from someone who brought over from the mainland or from Maui. It's not bad but I don't taste anything special with them.

I guess when the Oahu location is open and I have a chance to try it fresh then maybe I will get to change my stance on it.

I've had Krispy Kremes on the mainland, and I have to say that they really are very good... if they're fresh from the machine. (See this Quicktime movie for the mouth-watering details.) But once they cool down, they're not much better than any other doughnut. So bringing Krispy Kremes interisland as omiyage never made sense to me...

    The Interisland Krispy Kreme Trade

A fun story came down the Reuters news wire this morning:

    Flights Jammed with Flying Doughnuts

Why the dateline is Seattle, I'm not sure, but I can attest to the accuracy of the report! I imagine any mid- to large-sized company has a designated Krispy Kreme supplier by now. Where I work, having offices on the neighbor islands and regular meetings here in Honolulu means I see those Krispy Kreme boxes quite often.

If only I could get to them before everyone else did.

Who's tried 'em? Are they really that good? And if you don't live near one, how do you get your Krispy Kreme fix?
Working...
