I saw the other day that BnN is indeed experiencing severe pains and may not survive, so my errant thread title proves prophetic.

Borders as well as Barnes and Noble may both not survive. Sad.

That is what I posted yesterday. Isnt Ward Warehouse and Ward Center going to be razed and rebuilt in the upcoming plan to make that entire area full of condos and Auahi Street pedestrian only? If that is true I gather the Ward Borders will be razed and not come back.

Some interesting observations in the viewer comments on this Hawai‘i News Now story:

Borders to close two more Hawaii stores

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two more Borders book stores, one at Waikele Center in Waipahu and the other at the Maui Marketplace in Kahului, will close by late May.

These two, in addition to the Kailua-Kona and Lihue locations, are the latest in a list of 200 stores that are projected to close in the coming weeks, as the book and music retailer goes through bankruptcy reorganization.

The state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations Workforce Development Office could not say how many employees will be effected by the closures.

We can’t be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans.

Borders has to close yet more stores as part of its bankruptcy proceedings. Next on the chopping block could include Pearlridge, as well as Borders Express locations in Waikiki and Mililani.

Y'know, if the chain even has to close profitable stores, then you have to wonder about whether the company has a viable, long-term future.

                    Re: Barnes & Noble doomed?

It certainly doesn't as it exists currently, their kind is a lumbering stumbling dinosaur. Book-love is fading as generations move away from that form, and with the prices now charged for them and magazines in these frugal-minded days, the sad end of it all is in sight.

It is we who are doomed.

B&N was our saviour, now we have nothing.

                              Re: Barnes & Noble doomed?

Amazon engages in some fairly predatory methods scooping up the higher profit popular new books, which I've read many smaller bookstores rely on. Last week, I was pretty torn between getting a book I'd been looking forward to for a while. On the day it came out, Amazon had it marked down to less than half off. B&N, I found out later, had it at 30% off. My local mom and pop bookstore, with it's friendly children's section, helpful and well-read employees, and nice mixture of older used and new books...well, they had it for full price.

In the end, I got it from the independent store. Partially because I had a little extra money for once and partially because I enjoy having a bookstore I like in my neighborhood. Makes me wonder, though.

Not sure how interested I'll be in that. The music section is a shadow of it's former self.
