  • Mahalo?

I don't know where else to put this little story...

However, when I first arrived to Hawaii, I got off the plane and all the garbages cans said "Mahalo" on them.

For the first couple days I thought Mahalo meant Garbage.

And the next day I was given change at a store and the lady said "Mahalo... Come Again" I thought... sheesh how rude

And entertaining when in Hawaii you'll sometimes get "squid luau" that is cooked taro leaves with steamed octopus, or on the mainland want "tako" and be offered not octopus but a tortilla.

SouthKona, "Squid Luau" is made from Squid not Octopus!

        Not steamed either.

          whoever split this thread...Mahalo

I think this thread should be renamed...

"When mainlanders move to Hawaii and attempt to adjust"

I've been here for 14 years now...

And there are still many more local traditions, phrases, and customs that I still look forward to learning.

Yes, you are correct, usually (or is that "often") it's octopus ... unless you use the "hotel recipe", or have the boys go diving that day! Then, good chance you'll get octopus. Someday we'll have to have get together for a family dive and cookoff. Winner gets two plates full.

If you talking to me. No sweat goes into the food I prepare. Only LOVE!

And another thing...if Octopus is used, it is called "Octopus Luau."

                    Re: Mahalo?

Thank you Auntie Lynn for helping keep the recipes correct. I was probably unclear in my original post, I was not saying that octopus was "truly" squid luau, just that the names and recipes are sometimes interchanged depending on the cook, or if it's a commercial preparation, or what that day's catch was - so it can sometimes be entertaining guessing just what you'll get.

To be truthful, I don't ..... like..... squid or octopus .... so, either one means more for others!

                        Your problem is?

I had you on ignore... I choose a different route and tried to read into what you read and put you on my friends list...and I get this?

Any questions about the mainland I might be able to help you with?

I've lived here in Hawaii for about 14 years... Married to a local girl whose roots go way beyond any Haoles.....(I think she still gets teased for dating a guy from the mainland)....

and so whats your beef susie?

Please bring it to PM if you must.... I thought I was over you...
