  • Why doesn't Hawaii observe Daylight Savings Time?

Is the answer really as simple as "because we have enough sunlight?" as read here.

Or is this one of the things that the gov't felt that we should "keep" since they took our lands?
How'd I get so white and nerdy?

Oh give me a break. It has nothing to do with history or the government letting us "keep" anything.

It's a simple answer -- WE DON'T NEED AN EXTRA HOUR OF SUNLIGHT. WE DON'T HAVE TO.

No area is required to observe DST. However, if a state decides to observe it, they have to follow the schedule as stated by the law.

Because of Hawai`i's proximity to the Equator (compared to the continental states), there is less of a difference in the amount of daylight (sunrise to sunset) from Summer to Winter - hence no need to adjust the clocks for DST.

How about the Canadians? By agreement, whatever the U.S. rules are for DST (and whenever they change), Canada - a sovereign nation, independent of the U.S. - must follow suit. (But don't ask about Newfoundland & Labrador's half-hour adjustment...if you are curious, look it up.)

I just don't get it! Mainland folks don't gain an hour of sunlight--they just move it around in the day. Seems like more trouble than it is worth. Who is behind DST? I have never seen a convincing argument. And this year, legislators felt it necessary to tinker with the date that it changes. I am so glad we don't mess with our clocks. I never liked it when I lived on the mainland either.

I used to work the graveyard shift. On the clock change weekend, I was paid for 7 hours instead of 8 because my employer didn't know how to accommodate for the time change. They said I would get a "gift" of an hour in a few months.

Someone go say it right. DST is stooopid.

It sure nice to wake up with the sun out, but I'd rather have slept with the sun for an hour than showered and driven to work with it.

                      But what do I know?

I know that I like sleep. No take it away from me.

I didn't mind DST on the mainland. In San Francisco, in high summer in July, it would not get dark until after 9:00 pm. I loved that. Sitting in an outdoor cafe at 9:00 and the sun is still out. Whereas in winter, it got dark at 4:30 pm.

DLS is primarily to save energy:

Chambers of Commerce - people shop more at brightly-lit stores when it is dark earlier in the holiday season. Some researchers feel the "energy" aspect is hooey, and has no proof to support it.

In addition to saving energy, it actually makes a big difference at the end of the day to have an extra hour of sun. If you live in more northern latitudes, this is like a way to make up for the winters when the sun sets at like 3PM. We may not be able to relate because in Hawaii, the sun rises and sets pretty much the same times year round. This is why people get all excited when seasons change and summer arrives whereas in Hawaii, what's the difference between winter and summer? Maybe a little more rain? Summer vacation for kids?
