In the first photo, note the large piece (presumably carbon fiber) of the car's body flying through the air in the top right. When they showed replays from the cameras located behind the drivers on other cars, there was one car right behind the wreck and you can see that piece of wreckage missing the drivers head by less than a foot. Getting hit in the head by a large chunk of carbon fiber at 220mph would've likely meant a decapitation. Like I said...
