Malcolm Bricklin, the entrepreneur owner of Visionary Vehicles LLC, is now in talks with Chery Automobile Co. (which is owned by the Chinese government) to start importing 250,000 Chinese-made vehicles for US sale. Bricklin says it wouldn't make sense to start another car company if he can't sell cars for 30% less than what is available today, and he expects the quality and styling to be as good as Japanese cars.
Well, he had a hit when he started importing Subarus into this country (he also manufactured the gull-wing Bricklin), but he had a miss when he brought the Yugo here to our shores. So he's got a 50% chance of making money and breaking into the automotive market with the Chery. Of course, this does create one eency problem for the US car manufacturers: it means another competitor that will take away more manufacturing jobs, and we'd be dealing directly with a foreign nationally owned company. Ain't globalization wonderful? Will you be one of the first to by a 2007 Chery?
Let the jokes begin...
