  • Re: Susie's Practical Preps

So, as you can see, I am back. We went off, fishing, during a long weekend.

I've come back to find that there are some that are beginning to speak of prepping....such as the DOD Commissaries. That's the Dept. of Defense's military families' supermarket system. They have begun to ramp up prep talk, and have begun a program, called, "What's in your closet?". Maybe there are some military families, in here, that can clarify this one for us?

And, Iowa. A few towns have begun to campaign in supermarkets, and hand out flyers to residents. Good for them, the US Government has said that each state, community and family risks being on their own, should things get really bad.

Awwww....you'll miss the 'Life in France' thread!

Am I paranoid about this, or are you in denial?

When someone is on 'ignore' they can't be seen. Manoa can't see your question unless he takes you off 'ignore'.

If paranoid is 10 and denial is one...I, personally, would rate you a 7 and will admit to being a bit more diplomatic than I feel!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If you're not interested in Susie's disaster preparedness tips, you don't need to read this thread. There are a few other members who've felt compelled to respond on topic (or at least express confused curiosity), so let them be. There are lots of other topics to choose from.

Many Iowans, living in a mostly rural state, have long held onto a classic farm/work ethic, which includes an attitude of "be sure to take care of your neighbor, but be prepared to take care of your own needs without assistance." (Does Iowa have its own version of "aloha spirit?" Maybe so...)

Kinda reminds me of the parable about the ant and the grasshopper...the ant being the industrious one who worked hard to store food for the winter and the grasshopper who had better things to do than prepare. Then when winter came, guess who starved to death?

Nothing wrong with being prepared, especially since the government is telling people that it can't be counted on to help the citizens out immediately after a crisis or natural disaster hits.

At least they're up front about it. Last year they decided to just demonstrate this the hard way!

I'm not building a bunker in our backyard or anything, but we do keep more "in stock" than we used to. Even though I really hope we won't have to be living off spam, canned corn and bottled water for very long!

I can't, actually, even IMAGINE what life under 'social distancing' would be like. I'd have to sense of humour, in order to survive being cooped up, for a long time....especially if there was no internet!

From what little I read from the UN WHO's web site, social distancing is something they want to avoid from doing. And even if they did do it, it would local to an area that has an outbreak and I am guessing the length of time would be around weeks, not 6 months.

The time frame of 6 to 9 months, is the amount of time it would take for the disease to spread around the world.

It's the waves, that worry, too...maybe several of them, months long, months apart.

Of course it does, as does every other place in the world, where it is generally knows as "common courtesy" or "proper upbringing" or simply "good manners." They just don't make a big deal out of it like people in Hawaii do. I often wonder about that.

Like when someone in Hawaii does something kind for another, and people say, "Only in Hawaii!" as if they have a monopoly on treating people kindly. It's baffling. No, it's not "only in Hawaii." But people in Hawaii tend to travel less than people on the mainland and from other countries, so they lack a discerning world experience, I suppose.
