A new film adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina hits theaters September 7 with Keira Knightley in the title role. I am a sucker for a good period drama and the trailer shows promise. Directed by Joe Wright, co-starring Jude Law, written by Tom Stoppard. The ingredients are all there.
The only problem for me is that it's an 817-page novel I've never read, something I really want to do. So I plunged into the 2000 translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky (a new translation is set to be published in October, but that's no good for me now) and even set up a reading schedule so I'll have it done before the film opens. I feel like an undergrad again.
Anyone else itching to take this one in? If you love the source novel, is there anything you think must be handled a certain way in order for the film to work for you?
I'm sure I'll address this after I've seen the movie, but the English accents bother me. They are one of my peeves.
