Re: So cool! Music makes the world go around.

I usually HATE Tome Petty, at least his voice..., but he and The Heartbreakers have a new CD out and dang if Tom doesn't sound way better than usual. http://www.allvoices.com/contributed...new-album-mojo

Always have loved Mike Campbell's guitar work and it's a highlite thruout this one, sometimes alluding to classic Jimmy Page in both playing and tone.
The great songwriting and band work make this one I just may get If they keep on this track it probably won't be the last I consider.

She's quite an `ukulele player. She was here in Seattle several months ago and did a couple of free gigs.

Re: So cool! Music makes the world go around.

I believe I may have just found the single most incredible piece of music I've ever heard.
I was listening to a Santana double album called "Multi Dimensional Warrior". The first disc has vocals and the second disc is totally instrumental. And on that album (disc #2, track #13) is the song called "Blues For Salvador."
              It's a miracle.
Carlos wrote it in 1987, and it's just him on guitar and Chester Thompson on keyboards. We all know how unusually soulful his guitar playing is, but this... this is over the top. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it somewhere around 349.
Decide for yourself. Two videos for you.
The first one is at this link. It's 5:12 long and was taped in 1988 at Montreaux.
Then there's the second one, recorded in 1991 at Budokan, at this link. It's 5:20 long, and the keyboards are too soft, but the guitar is perhaps more soulful than the first video. Watch the first one, then click the second one and just close your eyes and absorb it.
But still, the track on the CD is even better than those.
              Enjoy.
              .
              .

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

                Bumped.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of older Cambodian rock music which can readily be found on several websites. This came about after being turned on the the California based rock band Dengue Fever who do covers of old Cambodian pop and rock songs as well as new songs.

The following links go to a few samples of this "psychedelic rock surf music" that was copied in the 1960s from American and British rock artists.

Links to more songs by Ros...

                More music

There have been two films documenting the "lost" Cambodian rock music (I've seen neither):

                A Go Go (live): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Tvsu1liLhs

There's a lot more videos featuring Dengue Fever on YouTube. Do a search with "Dengue Fever and band" combined. If you only do Dengue Fever, well you'll end up with links to the mosquito borne disease.

One of my friends turned me on to this band a few months ago and I was lucky enough to see them live at a free concert in Honolulu over the Halloween weekend.

Last but not least, Scrivener wrote about one of the band's albums on this very board several years ago.

Why I have recently liked this music is because it reminds me so much of old rock n roll records that I used to and still listen to from the 1960s and early 1970s. A lot of the songs seem to be "singles" oriented (re: probably meant for top 40 airplay in that country years ago)... at least the original songs.
                I'm still here. Are you?

Stjepan Hauser and Luka Sulic tear into Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" on cellos. "Dueling cellos"... check it out.

For those with an interest in music recording and its history, I recommend the book I'm in the middle of, mentioned here: http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showpos...&postcount=601

If you didn't watch the Academy Of Country Music awards show last Sunday night, you missed an awesome two-song duet. It started with former American Idol winner and current country megastar Carrie Underwood doing her new hit "Undo It"... and about halfway through she was joined by new AI host Steven Tyler. The entire audience of country superstars leaped to their feet and stayed on their feet for the next 5 minutes. After they finished Carrie's song the band broke into the clearly recognizable intro to "Walk This Way" and the crowd went even crazier. It was easily the highlight of the entire evening.
