Re: What's playing on your iTunes & iPod?
Originally posted by zztypeI normally listen to that album all-at-once and my between-track transition is set to zero, so it's not as noticeable, though still there. But last night "Polythene Pam" came up on the Party Shuffle and cut off abruptly at the transition to the next song on the album.
Most albums are configured to be a collection of separate songs so it's not that much of a problem. Abbey Road definitely stands out in the crowd, in that respect.
I often wonder what they were thinking when they did that! A CD can play the tracks unbroken, though they are separate tracks. Why can't an iPod?I'm still here. Are you?

I also think the iPod / iTunes culture has emphasized the single track more than anything else over a complete album. I don't know if this is good or what. You can buy only the single tracks you want off any album offered at the iTunes store vs. having to buy the entire thing if you opt for the traditional CD.I'm still here. Are you?

Re: What's playing on your iTunes & iPod?
I don't mind the single track bit at iTunes. I basically wanna buy what I want to buy. If I want a single track, let me have it. I don't WANT all tracks of all albums, always.
But I most often DO want the whole album. And when I buy an album, I want to listen to it the way I can off the album.
Most often, I will buy the CD if I really want the album. If I want a song or two, I'll buy from iTunes. If I want the music right away, I'll buy the album from iTunes. Otherwise, I'll wait and buy from a store, or get lucky and pick up the CD at a garage sale for $3.Make trouble, have fun, do good stuffs.

Re: What's playing on your iTunes & iPod?
The 'track' versus 'album' thing fascinates me, as I can imagine from the artist's perspective really wanting all the songs in sequence to tell a larger story. Of course, with most mass produced music out there, the real way it works is often spending 40 percent of your budget on producing two catchy, pop-friendly singles, 10 percent on filling the rest of the album with crap, and 50 percent on whole-hog promotion.
Fortunately, iTunes also sells albums, and at considerable discount to what you get at a music store. Click 'Burn to CD' and voila! An album without getting out of your pajamas. (Sans liner notes, though.)
I wish I could contribute to this thread, but it's been podcasts all week!

Re: What's playing on your iTunes & iPod?
All of the few songs that I either downloaded for free (that's week's freebie) or bought from iTunes are newer, single tracks that I generally have no interest in getting the entire album. I have limited myself to only purchasing those new music that I might like off of iTunes.
For older titles, I have most of what I want already on CD, LP or whatever... more CDs than anything else of course since I stopped buying vinyl on a regular basis years ago. That said I am on a slow track of trying to get everything that I either have/had on vinyl and tape to CD... which means waiting (for years sometimes) before I decide to buy this or that old album on CD.
What motivates me to get a marginal oldie album or single track is when I see the CD selling for dirt cheap at either Jelly's or some yard sale, should I stumble into one. The most recent time I bought a sizeable chunk of old CDs for dirt cheap was when Cheapos closed out earlier this year. I was with all the other vultures scouring the CD racks looking for those elusive bargains and snapping up what interested me, many titles for just a fraction of their normal retail prices. That was a good day.
If I ripped everything in my CD, vinyl and tape collection to MP3 or AAC, I would probably have about 300 gigs of total music, possibly more. Of course I don't have time or current hard drive capacity to do this. So over the years I have only elected to rip those favorite tracks that I like leaving the others alone. Some albums though I have ripped the entire thing to digital.
So far my current digital collection can still fit in its entirety on my 40 gig iPod. I know someone who does not have room on a single iPod to put everything he ripped on it. So he has to be selective.
That said, I cannot blame the attitudes and probable iPod/iTunes culture to focus these days on single tracks, especially when the industry continues to supply only 2 to 3 good tracks on a typical 12 track album.
Also most albums today are made with single tracks in mind. It's been years since I bought or listened to a "concept album" where all the tracks played in order made up a theme or story to the album, except for the ones I already own.... Pink Floyd's "The Wall" for example.
So what we have today is the digital resurgence of the 45 rpm record in digital form of course through singles oriented services such as iTunes.I'm still here. Are you?
