Say what you will about the format and methods, the results sure are an interesting mix of names, from bonafide stars to small bands. Wouldn't have guessed Jake Shimabukuro for "Rock," though (I love the guy, but can think of lots of artists that better fit the category)...

Lea gave up on HT back in November; she hasn't checked on us since (but you'll find her on LOTS of other boards still.)

Yeah I wouldn't consider Jake S. rock either. I wanted my boys pimpbot to win ska and Abe L. to win Ukulele.

It's a popularity contest. Anyone in the world with an e-mail address can vote, which is why we see certain artists come out as winners.

Ummm...dare I say it, "duh!" That IS the whole point of the HMAs, as opposed to industry awards like the Hokus - it's open to the general public for voting; so if you can rally your fans to vote - congratulations. It's about popularity, not about critical or peer acclaim.

Re: Hawaii Music Awards: Vote for your favorite artist

As I recall, it's only been the past two years that the HMA's finally set it up so you could only vote once.
Prior to that you could cast as many votes as you wanted, which is why the HMA's were held in low esteem. Too easy to 'rig' the results.
Kinda like the Advertiser posting their weekly list of top-selling Hawai`i albums. Everyone in the business knows that that list comes from Tower Records on Keaumoku. Want your new CD to be the "top seller"? Go to that Tower store and buy bunches of your own CD, which you can then re-sell at your band's gigs.
The Advertiser's list is useless, like the HMA's used to be.

Re: Hawaii Music Awards: Vote for your favorite artist

Interesting comment in John Berger's Star-Bulletin article today at http://starbulletin.com/2006/03/20/features/berger.html where he says "It was the fourth and final day of 2006 HMA events, and although about half of this year's winners either sent representatives or ignored the event entirely, the program moved smoothly and ran almost as scheduled."
If only half of the winners even bothered to go to the show, even knowing ahead of time that they'd won, it's an interesting look at how the musicians feel about the Hawaii Music Awards vis-a-vis the Hoku Awards, which are always extremely well attended. Perhaps the HMA folks should consider not announcing the winners before the awards show.
And the trophies are just plain ugly. Cheap, tacky little statutes holding a star. Not creative; not Hawaiian. Ugh. (Photos in the link above.)
                    .
