AC/DC (with Bon Scott) also has a song titled "Dog Eat Dog", although it's totally different than Nuge's.

Doesn't have the term "dog" in it, but don't forget the Scooby Doo theme song!

Then you have "Puppy Love" as performed Donnie Osmond. My older sister used to drive me nuts replaying that over and over and over.

Adam & The Ants also had a song called " Dog Eat Dog".

Give It All You Got(Doggy Style) bu Afro-rican

BTW, "Atomic Dog" was by George Clinton, not Parliament

            But of course.

While we're on that song, why is it named "Black Dog" anyway? It's not mentioned anywhere in the lyrics...

            Black Dog lyrics:

Hey, hey, mama, said the way you move
Gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove.
Oh, oh, child, way you shake that thing
Gonna make you burn, gonna make you sting.
Hey, hey, baby, when you walk that way
Watch your honey drip, cant keep away.

*ah yeah, ah yeah, ah, ah, ah., ah yeah, ah yeah, ah, ah, ah.

I gotta roll, cant stand still,
Got a flame in my heart, cant get my fill,
            Eyes that shine burning red,
Dreams of you all thru my head.
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah.

Hey, baby, oh, baby, pretty baby,
Tell me what you do me now.
            (repeat)

Didnt take too long fore I found out
What people mean my down and out.
Spent my money, took my car,
Started tellin her friends she wants to be a star.
I dont know but I been told
A big legged woman aint got no soul.

            * chorus

All I ask for when I pray,
Steady rollin woman gonna come my way.
Need a woman gonna hold my hand
And tell me no lies, make me a happy man.

Was "Black Dog" simply an odd nickname one of the band members gave a girl they were head-over-heels with?

Alice Cooper pointed out that the song "Panama" by Van Halen wasn't named after the geographical location. It was actually about a strip dancer they knew who's stage name was "Panama". lol

a black dog walked thru the studio one day during rehearsal.

one needn't expect every song in the world to have a format whereby into it a little one may say: "ahhh ok, aaaand we have a title!"

"Was "Black Dog" a cute nickname one of the band members gave a girl they were head over heals with? "
No, cuz the head never wen heal. haaa.

agreed, kimosan...and furthermore, the title seems to corroborate the (my)theory that songwriters can be so confident in their material that they feel no need to relate a song's title to its lyrical content...

also another one is the cajun ditty "Little Black Dog"...i don't know who penned it, but i do know that i play it almost every saturday night, and provide barnyard foley artist vibes (poorly)...i hope it's in the public domain...

There's a little black dog outside
There's a little black dog outside
                The little boy laughs
                The little girl sings
                The little black dog says
                bow wow wow wow wow
                Let me in.

or some such thing...there's more critters, too...

I totally agree. To further that point, there are many other Led Zeppelin songs that don't include the title in the lyrics.

With that in mind, we have a black dog that walked in during rehearsal. Then we have Dy'er Mak'er which is explained as such:

D'yer Mak'er (intended to be pronounced with a British non-rhotic accent as "jah-may-kah") is a song by Led Zeppelin, from their 1973 album Houses of the Holy. The name of the song is derived from Jamaica and is a play on words based on the joke, "My wife's on vacation in the West Indies." "Jamaica?" "No, it was her idea." The title was chosen because it reflects the reggae flavor of the song. Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant has said that he finds it amusing when American fans pronounce the title as "Dyer Maker."

ME AND YOU AND A DOG NAMED BOO - Lobo
                      BULLDOG - Ventures
                      HOUND DOG MAN - Fabian
SNOOPY AND THE RED BARON - Royal Guardsmen

PUPPY LOVE was done by Paul Anka long before Donny Osmond.

When I was a kid, we had a Bozo the Clown record player for 78 rpm records like LASSIE COME HOME. Some of them were colored discs in red, blue, and yellow in addition to basic black.

Did the BT Puppy label ever release any songs with canine references in the titles?

An aside: anyone remember the name of the bassett hound in the Flying-A (Tidewater Oil Company) commercials during the mid-60s? A local Tidewater dealer actually owned a bassett hound and his daughter's high school class "adopted" it as their class mascot.

I believe the dog in question was named Axelrod.

Who can name the dog listening to the Victrola in the old RCA Records logo? (And who can do it without using Google, etc?)

PS: I wish I hadn't mentioned Loudon Wainright's "Dead Skunk In The Middle Of The Road" earlier in this thread. The damned song has been stuck in my head ever since.

OK. On the dog topic I guess... What about artists whose names have "dog" or even a name of a dog or dog sounds in them? Coming to my mind quickly are...
