I remembered when Peter Caruso left NYPD Blue after the first season to pursue a movie career but that didn't panned out.
Then George Clooney left ER after four(?) seasons, and with some successes (the Ocean's # franchise) and a few flops (Batman and Robin), he managed to be Hollywood's A-list film star.
The real question here is, will CSI show be able to continue as strong as it has been without Mr. Peterson? It could have if actor Liv Schrieber's character lived. I liked him.Beijing 8-08-08 to 8-24-08

Re: Good or Bad Move? Leaving a Hit TV Series
Well William Peterson had a body of work and a fan following prior to his being on CSI (I understand he was considered quite a hottie in his day, too). http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0676973/
I *think* David Caruso may not have had as much of a fan following before NYPD Blue.
Also, there is speculation that the easing off of Peterson's appearances on CSI (since he apparently agreed to do guest appearances and will remain as an executive producer) may be temporary. But hey, I doubt he needs to keep working at this point so maybe he just wants to do something different. At least for now.

Shelly Long made a bad career move in leaving Cheers. But, I liked Kirstie Alley better. She even looked good in the two piece bikini on Oprah. But she has to keep that size and not be like the picture I saw on the cover of a tabloid when waiting at the supermarket cashier line.

We constantly make fun of Caruso's attitude, posturing and posing on CSI Miami.
Las Vegas is a much better show--I think they will do fine without Grissom. Miami is pretty and colorful--that's about it.
We met Grissom on our Vegas wedding. I was staring off into space in a casino when I noticed a familiar pair of legs walking by. I thought, "Hey! I know that bow-legged walk!" I looked up at his face and sure enough, it was him. He was nice and signed an autograph for my new bride.

Abe Vigoda - played Fish on Barney Miller. Left the program to star in his own shot-lived spin-off.
Jeff Conaway - played Bobby on Taxi. His hopes for movie stardom was sabotaged by a myriad of personal and substance abuse problems.
Norman Fell & Audra Lindley - played the Ropers on Three's Company. Made the same mistake as Abe Vigoda.
Polly Holliday - played Flo on Alice. Yet another limited range talent who thought she could star in her own spin-off.
Delta Burke - played Suzanne on Designing Women. Well, at least she had the consolation of knowing that the show was on its last legs by the time she left the series.
Susan Stafford - the original "letter turner" on Wheel of Fortune. While Vanna White has gone on to earning millions and being a household name, Stafford has gone on to earning a place on many people's "Whatever Happened To?" lists. This post may contain an opinion that may conflict with your opinion. Made a Good Move by Leaving Early Include:
John Travolta from Welcome Back Kotter
Farrah Fawcett from Charlie's Angels
Chevy Chase from Saturday Night Live
Suzanne Somers from Three's Company- Might be a ?, She got to use a device on her thighs.
Bad Move because remembered more for the character than actual name:
Col. Henry Blake to Hello Larry
The first Trapper John on MASH
The best looking daughter on the Cosby Show
Shannen Doherty from 90210 for her off & on set catfights
Jeff Conaway made a comeback this year on Celeb Rehab with Dr.Drew with the catch phrase, "TAKE THAT BACK!"
