Damn right! (I didn't think you were old enough to go there, before you moved to the Islands, Manoa. Shhhhh...I won't tell.)

Thanks, sweetie, but I think I ranted a bit too much in another thread. I shouldn't post when I'm getting a migraine.

That was our home bar! We played there all the time. Oh, God, don't tell me ... you weren't going there in the mid-80s, were you?

Um, yes, mid- to late-80s...but I was living in Seattle, so I only got there on rare occasions. But I went there almost every time I was in B'ham.

One time, I went up during a community radio conference at WWU, and went to see a blues-rock band that was playing there (don't remember who, unfortunately.) Turns out we had the wrong night, but I stayed there with two other friends (both male), and we drank several pitchers of Grant's Scottish Ale, while attempting to play pool. We were the only patrons by closing time (I think it was a Wednesday - a slow night.)

After we staggered out to go find a place to eat (a story in itself, involving a decorative fountain, an ATM, and the front window of Woolworth's - don't worry, no harm done), we got to talking with the wait staff at whatever place we ended up. We told them about the conference in town, and the band that we were one night too early to see. When we told them we had been at the Up-And-Up, they said to us: "isn't that a gay bar?" My friends and I looked at each other, then said: "not tonight it wasn't!"

We did find it funny that the bartender had pom-poms behind the bar, however...he was cheering on our efforts at "pool" - which involved more than one table at a time.

...or at least, that's how I sorta remember it...

Wasn't old enough to legally go until about 1990...

However, was still going there from about 87 till 90...until Speedy O'Tubbs in Fairhaven became popular!

          and before that...

Could just jump across the Peace Arch border and go to the clubs up in Canada at age 19!
I wonder how many college residents in Bellingham still cross the border to drink legally?
Especially after 911 and the increased border patrol!

What's this have to do with MTV??? I think Bellingham must have been one of the last places in the Nation to get MTV!!! so the only places we could SEE music was at the Bars and Clubs!!!

Re: MTV turns 25! Your favorite MTV moment?

Getting back to one of the original questions in this post:

What is your favorite all time MTV video?
Here are my top 5 videos from the 80s which kind of define what I think MTV was....

                  1. Take on Me - Aha
                  2. Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel
                  3. Lucky Star - Madonna
                  4. Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
                  5. Dancing in the Dark - Bruce Springsteen

There are dozens more but those are the ones that come to mind. They were also shown on "Night Tracks" and other video programs.
                  I'm still here. Are you?

It is brilliant in its simplicity. No need for CGI, editing, or storylines. Just basic physical creativity.
