Re: Favorite Local TV Ads!
Originally posted by tutusuePersonally, I feel the Aloha United Way ads are consistently good every year. I can't remember if the AUW campaigns are pro bono across the board but, if not, crew and talent are hired at greatly reduced rates. A different ad agency and director take on the account each year; then the cycle repeats itself. I'm remembering (perhaps not accurately!) that their efforts are pro bono.

Originally posted by FreaknHaoleThat charitable help ad -- Aloha United Way? -- is which people carrying bundles of light pass them on to the needy, and the light is transformed into something concrete, like a simple bowl of soup that gives the person another chance ... terrific concept.
To this day, I'm still have people joking to me just how much they liked my "balls" on those spots.
That was another campaign directed by Ryan Kawamoto, btw...an extremely talented fellow.Last edited by melorama; February 1, 2006, 08:52 PM.

Re: Favorite Local TV Ads!
KFC, locally, has a new "Lost" themed ad that had us giggling. Survivors on a beach, modeled after characters most of us know well -- a prissy blonde, a large, shaggy haired guy, a bald outdoorsman, an Asian couple...
The blonde panics. The bald guy throws a knife and says the solution is to hunt... for KFC. Buckets of chicken are discovered, one floating on the sea. The large guy becomes entranced by the numbers... six pieces, twelve pieces, twenty pieces...
Totally cheesy, but in such a fun spirit. I can only hope it's one of a series!

Originally posted by DXerSaw a TV add last night for Hawaiian Telcom, that made me laugh out loud. It is a take off of the "mainlandish" road runner ad that takes place in a coffee shop and how a big straw is like Broadband cable and a small straw is like DSL.
The Telcom ad is a local spot with a local waitress doing the same thing, but says, the big straw is like your cable modem, but you'll have to share it with everyone else, and then they cut to a wide shot and there are three people at the counter, one looks really sick, coughing and hacking. The other person doesn't look like someone you would "share your straw" with. The waitress then says, stick with your own straw.
Very clever, it made me laugh.

Good to see HECO bring back that good ole' "Hawaiian Electric" Koto tune by the jazz band, HIROSHIMA.
Hip MTV-style "energy-saving" clip-shots of people shutting off various electrical appliances and lighting.
**But my computer stays ON damned it!**

Re: Favorite Local TV Ads!
Originally posted by MadAzzaI liked that one, too. Of course, in real life they'd be pounding each other. I also generally like the Zippy's ads, for the music and the black & white design. (Is the producer the same one who did the ads with those people running around downtown with butterfly nets?) I really like the Zippy's ad with the woman running around town, running errands with her kid and her dog, because the dog in that commercial is really cute. Also (disclaimer), it's *my* dog! (He donated his fee to the Humane Society, which is where I got him.) But I think I'd pretty much like the Zippy's ads, even without the family tie. Catchy, simple music with a driving bass line and drums, uncomplicated themes ... and hey, it's Zippy's!

Originally posted by tutusueOh, and Kimo...lotsa takes are shot and the best one, according to the director and ad agency, is used. Of course, there are many times they wish they had more to choose from. But, in dealing with people with no acting experience (unlike David), the director knows when it's time to move on!

Re: Local tv ads
Originally posted by tiptoetulip[...] Anyway, I was reminded today of how I like the "Cars cost less at Cutter" commercials. They sort of leave you with that confused smile on your face. I especially like the guy on the deserted island who goes running for the bottle washing up on shore (the full-length commercial). He pulls out the note, and it says, "Cars cost less at Cutter." I dunno, cracks me up everytime. I also like the one of the young couple at the Chinese restaurant making eyes at each other. The girl opens her fortune cookie to find the same message. Priceless. There's that confused smile again. It's like I feel bad for them, but want to laugh at the same time.
And, you're right. That is David Farmer in the 'guru' spot. He's a good actor with a lot of theater experience.
Oh, and Kimo...lotsa takes are shot and the best one, according to the director and ad agency, is used. Of course, there are many times they wish they had more to choose from. But, in dealing with people with no acting experience (unlike David), the director knows when it's time to move on!
