    Re: My computer's problems

So is Windows shutting down on you or the power just cuts off on you?

Does it do this when you actually using the computer or do you just leave it on, walk away and when you come back its off?

Do you have to wait before you can turn it on again?

      Re: My computer's problems

heh heh, no problem on battery power, looks like a $10 ebay purchase of a new power cord is the remedy to reclaiming my working computer, again. Why do these things keep junking up?

Or it might be the power supply. I think the last one I bought cost around $25 new.

Sure, you can take it apart and vacuum out some dust. Scare off the geckos. Check that the cpu fan is still running. I don't think this is an approved method, but I once got a stuck cpu fan to work by spraying it with WD-40 (daintily).

Today, other than the courser pad and page movements being reticent, I'm not having any problems. May be coincidence or not, but once I popped the battery in and ran solely on that for an hour things have improved 100% with the sudden power offs. For now anyway.
I'm leary of unscrewing the complete back off my laptop, I 'think' the fans are pretty clean, it gets rather dust free air. How concerned should I be popping of the whole underside?

By the power supply, do you mean the brick?
This is what I've got lined up http://www.ebay.com/itm/270904452684...84.m1438.l2649

I just got another power off after posting, with the wall power on, not on battery power...

I don't really know about maintaining a laptop -- I recall taking one apart, long ago, is all. I was thinking in terms of maintaining my desktop. I don't even know whether laptops have cpu fans.

What is hogging up all but 40.1GB of the 139GB space on my C disc?
I have offloaded the latest ton of music files, plus what I had elsewhere, there's nothing in the recycle bin, and nothing sizeable stated in the C disc dropbox. I usually can gain back 2/3 - 3/4 of free space when I downsize my storage, but not this time.

I wouldn't know. I don't think people are as careful about economizing disk space, these days. I wouldn't really notice 100 missing gigabytes, myself. My desktop came with 1500 gigabytes, and I added a disk for another 2000 gigabytes.

Have you run a defragmentation program recently?

I think my Advanced Systems Care 5 all-purpose da kine does that, and I've been running it regularly lately. But I'll dl one of the defraggers that I had, just to be sure. Thanx

Well, that gave me a little more than 1GB in exxtra space...

Look for temp files in assorted directories; copies of the music files could be there, as well as photos/video/graphics from webpages.

I'd have to be edumacated in those terms and moves..., I'd end up deleting forever something important.

                          Re: My computer's problems

Fixing laptops is a lot trickier because so much stuff is crammed into a very small space.
The major issue with laptops is that they are very hot running devices even in temperate
                          climates.
Excessive heat vastly accelerates the failure rate of electronics in general.

Without meaning to seem cheeky or demeaning, i suggest checking out some linux
                          operating systems.

                            AHA!

Looky what a notebook forum member tipped me onto http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=In5JoDVlZ0Y

How should I address this issue, now that it's been displayed as an integral issue that HP should fix for free? What outlets do we have on Oahu that deal with this?
