"American" is a geographical and political distinction, not a racial description. But I can see how some folks consider it a cultural or ethnic category, but really, guys, only in the very broadest sense.

Diversity IS American! It's what makes the country interesting.

Is an "American" only a white male hetero Protestant? Those who insist that the country should be composed that way are jackasses. Those who think that the country is already that way have blinders on.

America wouldn't be America without Hawaiians as part of the mix. And every other group. We'd be a poorer nation without diversity.

Hey, isn't "Star Trek" sinking in yet?

Yes, geographical in the continental sense, political in the “U.S.A.” hijacked the word sense.

We can’t be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans.

So if someone lke Ernie Els decides to become an American citizen he can then call himself an African American.

So then, for a mostly caucasian lookin guy like me, who is 4th generation Californian, with roots that trace back to Missouri in the 1820's, and can't be traced any further, and with a legit claim to English, French, German, Scottish, African, Irish, Spanish, Welsh, American Indian, Swedish, Persian, Italian, and Oklahoman, how would my racial description be classified?

The very notion of racial distinction is anachronistic.

I call myself the first "Modern American", and I claim no roots, and ALL the cultural traditions that I choose to embrace.

Just noting --- after his rant to start this thread, Hobart left it alone (along with HT) since Nov. 11. You think he really wanted to discuss the topic, or just wanted to fling a firecracker into the room?

Hmm...you may be right, Nacho. Both seem to exhibit similar tendencies. Or maybe Shaun is Hobart's kid? I think Shaun's in his 20s.

Ask Shaun if he plans to buy a helicopter, so he can fly from Hawai`i to the mainland.
