$Money$ is made by drinking "nikohana" a mixture of tea and water or soda for a percentage. Example: Customer buys waitress a drinkie for $10.00. $7.00 goes to waitress and $3.00 goes to house. Champagne is $100.00 per bottle and there is also $500.00 and $1,000. Same percentage rate. All tips are waitresses.
This isn't from personal experience, because I don't drink anymore. But, a drinkee used to cost $20, which has recently gone up to $40. The logic of these bars is that the bad economy means less patrons, so raise the price.

      Re: Hostess bars?

One afternoon a buddy and I strolled into a Hotel St. dive and my friend immediately announces "we just got off the boat and are gonna spend all our money on you!". Needless to say, we were quickly swarmed by all the 'perfume' and became the stars of the show, until about 15 minutes later when they found out we had no $ other than for the first drink... We survived!

At Hubba Hubba one night, sitting at the cat walk, a cute girl is out and pretty frisky. At one point she sends a round house kick towards my face which I knew was going to come way to close, if not in fact connect, but I wasn't about to even blink as the stilleto brushed the baby hairs of my nose.
I guess she was used to doing that, but not used to having someone willing to match her and give her the eye in the process.
      She lost her composure...

Had a nice lil old fashioned pool cue brawl at the ancient Pantheon. They were drunk, and I wasn't. Nuff' said.

      Chinatown used to be fun.

There's a cool article on the wonders of old Chinatown in this week's WEEKLY.

The life of a Hostess is not one to envy. She is a slave of the bar. Especially, the owner. She may have money but she doesn't have time to enjoy her riches. Sad.

I don't know about everyone or what it was like back then but I think "slave" is too strong a term. I know a number of the girls, and they come in and leave when they please. They take days off if they feel like it. Change bars on a whim or leave the bars all together if they make that choice.
