You are so right about some people being obsessive and can't control their games, shopping, etc.

I play fifty cents per game, four times a week, which is two dollars a week. When the ticket wins five or ninety dollars, doesn't matter I let sis keep it for her trouble of time, gas and getting the darn things, but then they have advance play where she can only have to buy a ticket every five weeks, as you can play each game ten advance plays, and then just put it away.

I've never had a compulsive problem and I don't even go to a movie theater but a once a year, maybe. It's been more than a year now...two Harry Potter movies ago, or something. It's legal, fun and a tiny hobby of mine.
-That's perfectly legal what you're doing. Just make sure your sister isn't hogging the "real prize winnings".

      Howdy,Oldie,

not a chance! both of my sisters could have "Integrity" as their middle names, they're that wonderful and trustworthy, plus we're very close. they can have my ATM card, keys to my home, trusted them with my kids when little, hubby.....well, you get the idea.

That's the cool thing about playing through another on the mainland, it's all on the internet and you can play from afar by checking it regularly, etc.

I have no interest in gambling. Never done it. Never been to the Ninth Island or similar. Never wished to win a million dollars--the idea, while a cool one, doesn't hold much appeal to me, because it isn't going to happen and there are other things more worthwhile to wish for by working on it, kwim?

More like $600. Lottery agents here in RI will pay-out prizes up to $599; anything over that amount must be claimed in person at the RILOT office in Cranston. I would think that anyone from Hawaii who has a major prize winning ticket ($20,000+) would not have a problem making the flight over to the mainland to claim its prize at whatever state's lottery office the ticket was issued.

As for the morality of lottery playing, which seems to have arisen within this thread: I don't personally play the lottery...I agree with much of Pua'i Mana'o's take...but I also agree with the points Karen and shaveice make. You play your $2 bucks a week and hope for the best, despite the odds. When you lose, it's like a cup of coffee...ain't no big thing..the potential pay-out was worth taking a shot. There are far worse ways to spend $2. If you set aside $2 a week, ($104 a year) it's no different from the strategy Lynn suggests for players who visit Vegas..set your limit and don't exceed it. Playing the lottery is no different from anything else that requires self-discipline, such as the consumption of alcoholic beverages and calorie-laden desserts. Playing the lottery does not have to lead one to the "slippery slope" of gambling addiction. Realize that the odds of winning the "Big One" is extremely remote, and as such, play the game sparingly and within your set limits.

Lottery is the same in essence. First you start off small. Den it engulfs you. Little by little you think you can hit the Big one. Greed. Amazingly, the winners are always people who are humble. Yep! People who deserve to win...not ones who are greedy. Givers so to speak.

hi auntie. thanks for your concern but i fortunately don't have the gambling bug. went to vegas once in 1985 just to see what all the fuss was about and didn't gamble a penny. i've never had a desire to fly back there since. playing poker or any game for pennies/bucks? nope, never had an interest. gambling on football games? not interested. last time i was near a one armed bandit was about two years ago when i went skiing at tahoe. i had no interest in even playing a nickel. with this lottery idea of mine now, the amount i'm thinking of "investing" is way less than even a ticket to vegas so in a nutshell, i see it as a calculated risk involving a small cost, low odds, and a possibly high payoff

Surfingfarmboy, you speak wisdom. Thanks for posting. What you said resonated with me.

Shaveice, same here...never got into gambling, don't know how to play cards and never been to Vegas. I did fly through there once, and was laughing cuz they have the one-armed-bandits right in the airport, was bored on layover and decided I'd do ten dollars, I walked away with thirty, bought lowfat ice cream and pocketed the rest. My lotto money is like the money I don't put into a soda machine, etc. It has never caused me to not give to charity, or make the humble investments I have, didn't prevent me from buying a house and I wear levis from Walmart, not designer jeans, have never taken a cruise and yet life a full and happy life.

glad to hear it. no doubt, auntie is thinking of people who can't control their desire to gamble and who lose all sense of proportion and priority. for them, having access to any form of gambling is like having a pusher in a convenience store, ready to dispense some ice.

i forgot to mention one more important item: i have no debt (car, mortgage, etc) and i certainly didn't get this way by betting the farm on a longshot! being half chinese, i feel a cultural obligation to be stingy with my money!

You got the right attitude, Shaveice. Nobody ever got unduly rich off of me. I'm a savvy consumer and a bit of a consumer advocate. I call, write, ask, question, compare and do such a dang good job. Heck, save everywhere you can so you have it to spend elsewhere, as well as for emergencies and to help others. (just think how much of a paradise this world could be if only each of us would help just those that we come in touch with in our own little orbit. I don't have gates' money and can't help everyone but we do help those we can)

I still don't understand why Hawaii has no lottery. 43 states have legal lotteries, and you can add DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands to that list.

I love to gamble, and me and the BF won about $2500 from our spare change jar last year when we took it to an indian casino in California. That little windfall covered the costs of shipping our car and crates to Hawaii, with a little pocket money left over. Maybe Hawaii doesn't necessarily need a casino, but why not a casino boat? Or at least a simple, basic lottery? I mean, there's already cockfighting, um, I mean 'rooster enthusiast clubs'...

My understanding is it goes back to the historical roots of Hawai‘i. The first Westerners (haole) to settle in the islands were missionaries. One of the oldest, and today one of the most prestigious schools in the nation, Punahou School, was founded by missionaries. At one point religion had such a grip on Hawai‘i, hula and the Hawaiian language (‘ōlelo Hawai‘i) were banned. Ironically, in the past two decades, both have flourished at Punahou. The morality of both were questioned, the former because of the “suggestive swaying movement” and the latter because anything else than English was considered “heathen.” If you go to Moloka'i, as you drive the main stretch, you’ll see every tenth building is a church. Thus gambling was taboo, based on moral grounds. As far as gambling alternatives, those are being discussed here.

We can’t be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans.

                          Hawaii Statutes

"6) "Lottery" means a gambling scheme in which:
                          (a) The players pay or agree to pay something of value for chances, represented and differentiated by numbers or by combinations of numbers or by some other medium, one or more of which chances are to be designated the winning ones; and
                          (b) The winning chances are to be determined by a drawing or by some other method based on an element of chance; and
                          (c) The holders of the winning chances are to receive something of value."

                          COMMENTARY ON §712-1229

This section provides that it is no defense to a prosecution under any section relating to a lottery that the lottery itself is drawn or conducted outside this State and is not in violation of the laws of the jurisdiction in which it is drawn. This eliminates spurious defenses in cases involving the Irish Sweepstakes or lotteries conducted in other states. Because the person who places the bet or buys the lottery ticket is not criminal under this Part, only the seller or promoter is covered and it should make no difference that the seller or promoter is dealing in "chances" based on an out-of-state contingency. The section was renumbered from §712-1228 to §712-1229 by Act 201, Session Laws 1973.
May I always be found beneath your contempt.
