      Re: Hawaii boating photos

For all three or four of you who are interested, the photos from Memorial Day at the sandbar are finally available. You can see all 32 photos at this link. Either click on Slideshow in the top right corner, or click on the first thumbnail to enlarge it and then keep clicking Next.
I anchored well away from the huge crowd at the high spot. The first few photos show the crowd from a distance, and those were taken around 9:30 in the morning when the crowd was still small. When I pulled up anchor and left around 4:30 in the afternoon, I went by the greatly increased crowd and took the rest of the photos.
The big news, of course, was the increased presence of law enforcement. There were two of these Coast Guard boats:

And two of these Police boats:

There were also two similar boats from DLNR, so a total of six patrol boats. I didn't get pix of the DLNR boats because they were busy citing people at the time and I didn't want to make them nervous by approaching too close.
Part of the reason I support the extra enforcement is because of idiots like the jerk in the photo below, who blasted by me on his jet ski at about 35mph while I was standing in the water taking a photo of my boat (behind him in the photo) and he almost hit kids swimming nearby:

I waved at him, but I think I may have forgotten to use all five fingers.
More photos of the crowds to follow.

        A parking lot for boats:

Nice shot of a volleyball in the air:

More boats, farther down the line:

            Getting toward the far end:

            And at the far end:

Lastly, look at the immense crowd of people in the lower right corner of this one!:

And then I pulled away, hammered the throttles, and got the heck away from all that. The photos don't give you a clue about the noise from 100 or so stereos cranked up to 11, but you get the idea of what it was like out there.
Thank God for the law enforcement that kept things under control and kept the crowds much smaller than in past years.
            All pau.

Went motoring around Keehi Lagoon and out the channel a little bit this morning.

                Check out "Tubby"

                And Diamond Head

Now off to work... what a life we have in Hawaii, eh?!

Nice! Looked like perfect weather over there.
And I'm jealous glad that you got a chance to get out on the water today. I've missed the last two weekends due to mechanical problems, exacerbated by a totally unreliable mechanic.

                    Re: Hawaii boating photos

The mechanic finally fixed my boat (bad starter on the starboard engine)... hooray!
I went out for a race last weekend, but it was pretty boring thanks to wind at a steady 0 knots, gusting to 1. (Okay, it was actually about 5 knots.) Photos were nice, but nothing exciting.
Yesterday's Channel Challenge race was better, with winds about 12 to 15 knots. I'll post some race photos a little later, or maybe tomorrow. But the race was long enough that I was able to spend a bit of time at the sandbar, so here are some photos from that part of the day.
I was in a bit of a hurry, and had my kayak along for the ride:

As I passed Marine Corps Base Hawaii, I could see part of the Bayfest 2008 activities:

Yesterday was a pretty day on the bay; darned near perfect weather made for some fun shots:

Around 11:30 on the 4th of July, and the sandbar wasn't very crowded (and look how big the dry area is!):

These folks had tons of spare dry room:

The dry area was about the size of a football field! It went all the way back to that farthest boat, just to the right of the middle of the photo (under the darkest cloud):

From a different area, again showing the huge size of the dry spot:

Two friends boats were rafted up together and had me join them for a few minutes for a Bloody Mary (and as Sansei would say, "It was yum!"):

I love this camera. Only $200, but with the 12x zoom all the way from the sandbar, I got this:

                          Saw some more friends:

And you may remember an exceptionally cute photo (in the Photo Sharing thread a few months ago) of their dog Mano? Here he is again, yesterday:

These folks were having fun towing their kayak (and also note H-3 in the background):

And their kids were having fun!:

                            Lucky we live Hawai`i:

Not what you usually think of as a classic ship's figurehead:

And at the other end of the same boat:

                                While farther down the bay:
