    Re: Hawaii boating photos

This is a 14-year-old boy driving his dad's boat:

That's Kaneohe Yacht Club in the background:

This 134' Coast Guard cutter was anchored in the middle of our race course. I presume it's there for security reasons in case anything happens while Barack Obama is staying on Kailua Beach. And check out H-3 in the background:

Just a few more (I think)...

This wasn't intentional, and it wasn't cropped; it just shows why it's tricky framing photos on the ocean. My boat bounced in the choppy water just when I snapped the shot:

Here's a little better view of that Coast Guard cutter. The darkness on the aft half of the hull is from their generator's exhaust. The tall building in the background is the Pohai Nani retirement center. Maybe the Coasties are protecting them? :

Seeing all the whitecaps on the water shows you how breezy it was:

I think the next post will be the last one...

Yep. Almost done. This is the kind of photo that the racers can use to see the trim of their sails and make improvements next time:

        This is passing Coconut Island:

And so is this, while the land on the right side is the west end of the Marine Corps base:

        And just one more photo...

The lovely Hokule`a is in Kahana Bay for a special event tomorrow (Saturday), open to the public from 9am to 3pm.
It was a drizzly rainy day there today, but I snapped off a few shots:

But then along came a nasty security guard, chasing me back to my car:

I imagine most of you boating fans know the story behind this movie about the 2007 Transpac race from Los Angeles to Honolulu.
October 16th will be the premier showing of "Morning Light" and ticket sales will benefit both the Hawaii Youth Sailing Foundation and the Polynesian Voyaging Society.

I'll be there. Anyone else going?
Also, remember the two one-hour specials on ESPN2 -- 3pm on October 8 and 7pm on October 9.
And if you wonder how Disney got this onto ESPN, remember that Disney owns ESPN.

It's been a while since I shot a race. Four weeks ago I missed one because I had a board meeting, and then two weeks ago the race was cancelled due to a total lack of wind.
We did get a race in yesterday, though. It was perfectly clear and sunny, but with light winds that never got above 8 knots. Not very exciting conditions and not the best day for photos, but I'll share a few of them.
I think this one is my favorite, just because it's different than most:

                      A couple more "people" shots:

These two photos from the starting line show how flat and calm the water was:
