Brilliant analysis, Dave. It's all about predicted revenues, which means getting watched by people who buy lots of stuff, and you're not saying anything about that. Well, that wouldn't be much fun to talk about, but the NBC executives don't have to be entertaining.

Watch for David Letterman making Jay Leno jokes in his monologues.

I'm watching Monday's show now. It's kind of cool.

David Letterman went on yesterday without a studio audience.

It's difficult to imagine the show without Paul.

A few nights ago, Letterman apologized to Mitch Romney, in hopes of getting him to come on the show, for all the ways he'd insulted him in the past few months. That required him to review all the insults, in detail. I suppose Romney supporters don't find all this very amusing.

The show needs the Paul Shaffer laugh.

Letterman thought it might have been Leno who did it.

He started doing that over the last couple of months. . . before that, only rarely. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Some of the stuff is pretty obscure. It may be a technique to get the audience "into it."

Does David Letterman make an inside joke with an audience member during his monologue on every show?

I saw that too. Letterman mentioned that the audience member, Henry Winkler, and Letterman little exchange sounded like a skit.
