The logical inconsistencies in this ad just bug me, for some reason. Why would a loan officer not have a multitude of writing implements at his desk? If he didn't have said pens, why would he need some woman to fire one to him from 25 feet away at 98mph? And why would he feel a need to backflip through the lobby just to offer up the pen? The customers have a zillion mortgage documents to keep as a memory of the occasion; they need the damn pen, too?
You're right of course, but heck I would love to see my banker do back flips for me instead of stamping "No" on my loan application from behind his big koa desk paid for with my service fees.

As inconsistant as this ad was, you still remember the exact actions of that commercial which tells me that commercial got you to remember it...which is exactly what it intended to do.

Logic has no place in the entertainment biz anyway or it wouldn't be creative or fun. And we wouldn't have a topic to make fun of if all ads were boring and mundane. As bad as the old 70's Rinso ads were, I still remember it as if it were...um ah....has it been over 30 years already?

Bank of Hawaii continues its series of "we think it's cute but they're insipid" commercials with the "That's My Bank" guy and a sorry attempt to infuse the local lingo with a new transitive verb: Bankohana™. "I Bankohana™ you!" says he. "He Bankohana™'s me!" swoons she. "Puke," says we.

Oh yeah. I only hear them on Clear Channel stations. I guess since Gregg Hammer and Shawnee used their products in their wedding, they can advertise more on CC based stations.

    LOL
I mostly just watch TV news programs, but still the Focus ads a lot. There are actually several of them, not just one version, but in each one the 'talking' Ford Focus is whining at its owner.

When this thread first started on Mel's Hawaii Radio & TV website (before it moved here) I believe that same comment popped up once or twice. Apparently the commercial continues to annoy folks.
And while they're not "local" commercials, I think the series of Ford Focus ads are horrible. The ones where the cars talk/whine/nag at their owners, ya know? I guess I'm not clear on how ads showing annoying cars would make me want to buy one.

you know what the most ironic thing is about all of this.. I guess, as commercials... mission accomplished

..not that we go out subscribe/switch/buy whatever it is they're selling... just that their brand recognition has stuck in our heads...

    Here's one I CAN'T STAND...

The Lava Liner commercial with Auggie and Lanai.. "Don't scratch da' truck".. "Eh nevah mind.. Lava Line". The "acting" is so scripted and phony it's rediculous. Ugghh!

    more to follow..

Who said that Auggie and Lanai were ever actors? Their just the last go-to for some kind of credibility. The bottom of the barrel has been scraped as far as imageing/branding utilizing local celebrities (not meant to knock Auggie and Lani). So the ones that are left are getting gigs that I'm sure their even surprised about.

wooo, nice boards Mel (first foray in here, still old ones were cool too)

    As for commercials:

    1. 93/7 Crap HMSA's boast that only 7% goes to "them." Which is a load due to the fact 2 of the companies I work for pitched HMSA for HMAA due to HMSA's ever "rising" 93%

    2. Honolulu School of Massage ..just irritating.. "THE FUTURE'S IN YOUR HANDS!" thought it was just a radio irritant until I saw the commercial on tv

    3. Das My Bank ..looks like lotsa folks picked this one... would love to see a safe fall on his head

Slightly off topic, but deals with commercials and ones that are just as irritating on the radio:

    4. The Wedding Ring Shop .. guess the owner wants to be heard on radio, guess none of his loved ones told him he has the WORST voice for radio... like nails on a chalkboard.

Pomai, this thread is only 2nd to the ones for American Idol I believe. But given that a lot of people are chronic complainers, in the long run this will probably be the most popular thread in this section. As a general rule, whether it is letters to the editor or talk radio, I think more people prefer to vent whenever they have something to complain about vs. being complimentary and reporting something that is good.

I guess this goes back to the old saying, "no news is good news" and "if it bleeds it leads." Got something bad to report? It's quickly out there, often on page 1. Got something good? It sometimes is reported but does not make for interesting or compelling copy, and is usually buried on the bottom or in the back somewhere.

Hence people complain here about a lot of commercials instead of singing praises in the other topic for the good ones.
