The answer is yes. The bailout was promoted as restoring consumer confidence in the financial markets that would result in a stronger Stock Market. So far, that's not working. The reason it is not working is that foreign nations do not have confidence that this bailout is going to work. The proponents of the bailout forgot to figure in that part of the equation.

No, it's 'cause the treasury dept. hasn't dished out the funds yet.

      http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5h..._HVuwD93L6A6G0

Bush said: "I believe that in the long run, this economy is going to be just fine." He said it will take the Treasury Department some time to enact a $700 billion plan to buy up troubled assets from financial firms so that credit will start flowing again to consumers.

        Hey tutusue!

        Here's another 5 year prediction:

        http://money.cnn.com/2008/09/15/news...ion=2008092216

In 2005, when oil was $58 a barrel, he predicted it would be at or above $100 within a few years. Now he sees it climbing to $200, $300, or higher. "There really is no roof on oil prices at this point," he says.
While demand growth in the United States has slowed recently due to higher prices, the EIA projects that China and India will more than pick up the slack. And the IEA recently warned that high prices won't slow demand growth in emerging economies. If demand wants to go north of 100 million barrels a day and supply can't break 90 million (or drops below 80 million, as Simmons believes will happen within five years), it will be a price squeeze felt around the world. The peak-oil crowd will be able to declare victory - but nobody will be celebrating.
"John McCain is energy illiterate," Simmons is saying. "He's just witless about this stuff. As a lifelong Republican, I'm supporting Obama." A dozen oil and gas men sitting around a conference table in Lafayette, La., chuckle nervously as he continues. "McCain says, 'Oh, we're going to wean ourselves off foreign oil in four years and build 45 nuclear plants by 2030.' He doesn't have a clue."

And why couldn't Hawaii do something like this?:

Last spring Hart and Simmons cooked up a plan to build a floating wind-turbine farm 20 miles off the coast of Maine that they say could easily power the entire state - the equivalent of five nuclear power plants (and far enough from the coast not to be visible). The Gulf of Maine has 100 gigawatts of wind power, or 10% of U.S. daily consumption. The hope is that Maine can be an example for the rest of the country. Playing off the high profile wind-farm plan recently proposed by Simmons's buddy Boone Pickens, they're calling this idea the Pickens Plan Plus. Things appear to be moving fast. Senator Collins has thrown her support behind it.

Yooooowza!!! I wonder if the pro-rail people have read this. Could be good ammunition for them!

I've heard, but can't cite right now, that people object to to the look of wind farms; that they're a blight on our landscape. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

But clumps of em 20 or more miles off shore? It's not like they'd have to be climbing up and down the sides of the mountains, they could be made to look more esthetically pleasing to the eye than an oil rig.

If oil does hit $500.00 a barrel...with the shipping and what not? Y'all are gonna be so screwed.

I have to disagree. There was an immediate injection of funds into the financial system with a supposed immediate effect in the Stock Market according to this article. Yes, Bush says it is going to take time, but what else can he say when the economy is crumbling around him. He also said that there were WMD's in Iraq. Today's selloff in the Stock Market is not what the proponents of the bailout expected. They expected a dramatic run up in the Market.

Has the idea of establishing a wind generating farm on Koho'olawe ever been discussed? The island is uninhabited. It is owned by the governement. It is 7 miles from the nearest island, Maui. It could supply enough power for the whole state of Hawai'i.

Hawai'i is a natural for electric vehicles because of the small distances traveled. Electric vehicles can now get up to about 250 miles per charge and technology is improving on a daily basis.

                      The potential is exciting!

I don't think it was all just dumped into the banks. From what I understood they were going to parcel it out and buy the crap...I don't think the banks have managed to gather their fecal material into any kind of a close proximity yet.

That's what I was thinking too. It's not like you guys are going to be doing a weekend 300 mile road trip on the spur of the moment.

Well you could, but it'd be a hella tedious weekend goin 'round and 'round.

Now the government will be lending directly to corporations for short term operating capital. It looks less and less like capitalism every day. How strange to see socialism for the rich and dog eat dog survival of the fittest capitalism for the middle class.

Interesting isn't it? The US economy is looking more and more like the corrupt economies of the thrid world.
