My favorite Christians are the kind who defend the sanctity of idols. LOL
Seems to me the war god, Ku, would be more fun than old JC at a frat party.

[QUOTE=Peshkwe]So ya saying folks who would like a little respect for the religious part of the culture that's being abused and misused should just shut up and eat it like good lil subbies and let the clueless go on their merry way?

Yes, I want to respect and learn about the Hawaiian culture; that's why I'm reading this thread. But if I have to sift through comments about Haole's asses, I probably won't get far enough to be enlightened.

"Dr." James Dobson likely never personally bombed an abortion clinic, but he gives a rationalization to sociopaths that do! If a cartoon of Mohammed can spark world-wide rioting, then do I have to worry about buying a tiki in Kalihi?

                What's the problem with that.
                This is the majority of those that buy and use these products;
                haoles.
                = Foreigners. Whites.
(foreigners to the Polynesian culture, of course)
That's the majority part of the body that sets down on these tiki slave products; asses.
                statement of fact.
Sounds like some people may prefer to not "get far enough to be enlightened"

                  You say yes...

Yet you also say you want to respect and learn. I'm confused...shut the frik up and teach me? Eh?

I would say yeah, ya gotta worry about buying a Tiki in Kalihi. Not because you'll get jumped, but for you, it'll be like tobacco for the colonisers. Tobacco is a sacred plant to be used for prayer and not for the self, abuse it and it will eventually abuse you....

                  Errmmm.....on second thought.......

It displays a lack of this uh..."aloha" to assume it is racist. In fact, it is racist to assume I am being racist by me calling a spade, a spade. Being haole myself, I know whereof I speak. And even moreso, having been raised here on Oahu, and back hannabaddah days, having had the pleasure of being guided and educated in the ways of the islands by my two respective Hawaiian stepfathers. When I set my haole ass down anywhere near a carved image of a Polynesian god, it probably will be at its feet and not in its shadow, yea, sure youbetcha.

"Foreigners"? Yes. And "foreigner" is not synonymous with "white." So why don't you call Asians "haoles"?

Because it's easier for them to pretend to be Hawaiian?

That's what's wrong with the word "haole." It's laughable, really —descendants of Asian immigrants yelling about "haoles" screwing up "their islands."

                        Kamehameha II (b. 1797, d. 1824)

A great contrast from his father, Liholiho (Kamehameha II) was 22 years old when he became King. Kaahumanu confronted the King and said that it had been his father's wish for her to share rulership of the land. Had anyone attempted such audacity in front of Kamehameha I, the culprit might well have been slain on the spot. Liholiho offered no objection and split his power in half with Kaahumanu. Early in his reign, Kaahumanu and his mother, Keopuolani, talked him into sitting down to eat with a group of noble women in view of onlooking commoners. The signal had unmistakenly been given that the ancient religion of Hawaii was dying. Shortly thereafter, Liholiho ordered god images burned and heiaus demolished throughout the islands.

                        Kimo,

Do you feel this piece of history should have any bearing on how the religious icons of the Hawaiians should be treated especially given this event took place prior to the arrival of the Protestant missions?

You're asking a white man how religious icons of Hawaiians should be treated?

I was asking his opinion, not making him the sole authority. You may express your opinion as well, white woman.

You're very salty. Don't ever change.

Btw, what am I, silly putty?

If sovereignty wins, do we have to demolish all the heiau and tiki, in order to conform to the monarchy's wishes? OR Is Queen Kaahumanu evil, and we need to change the name of the main boulevard in Kailua-Kona from Queen Kaahumanu Highway to something else? I favor calling it a boulevard, not a highway, since it is peppered with "stop" lights.

I guess that would make the Hokulia Highway a lot easier to build. Maybe Liholiho was a visionary? Maybe Queen K was a villain?

Maybe the past is more important than the future?
