I think the message that family wanted to get out was, you mess with one from that family, and you take them all on. Well, it didn't end there. Fights went on for days after that because the kids from that Waimanalo family were actually troublemakers and tried to flaunt that "family solidarity" the wrong way.

ugh. I saw *so* much of that growing up on homestead. Back then, folks didn't have birth control, and in our homestead the average family size was like 8 kids (had plenty 10+...and the families still live there). I will just say this: the boy I had a crush on when I was in high school I couldn't date because three of the boys in my family scrapped his four brothers. Real Hattiefields and Maka'oiz, I tell you.

How I managed to find a nice Hawaiian boy, from my hometown (but NOT from my homestead) to whom I wasn't related, is amazing to me!

Could be worse...over here they're still marrying first cousins. This town has about 5000 people, most who have been here since the bronze age. There's maybe thirty family names, in the phone book. Plus, they no like 'fresh blood', and are suspicious of any stranger.

I am a 1983 Waialua grad as well...my mom is a 1961 grad and her youngest sister is a 1971 grad....there were 10 of them....and yes, I remember the 'paddle' but do you remember Jose Angel? the principal at Haleiwa Elementary School? He also had a paddle (with holes) which he used often......thanks for sharing your memories with us....it helps to bring back some of my memories of growing up in Haleiwa....ahui hou!

Finally! A WHS person!

I went to Waialua Elementary (we lived in Mokuleia), but only for 6th grade...I think it was 68, and then on to the high school, for only two years, before we took a trip to Germany. The years that I went, they finished the new admin building, and Mr. Kuwada moved, from the old wooden buildings at the front. Was there still a dress code, by the time you got there?

I have my Dad's class ring, from back in (if I remember, I have to go see) 1947...maybe your Grampa would remember school life from that time. My Dad says that, back then, Jerry's, in Haleiwa was THE place to take a date, and be seen.

Ask your Auntie if she remembers my cousin, Paulie Ocampo, he must've been two years behind, though. Does your Mom or your Auntie, or anyone, have a yearbook, from 69, 70, or 71?

Do you remember the old Waialua store? Or the hamburgers at Dawn's place? Or the smell of the mill? Whenever I want to remember the smell of the mill, I put some raw sugar into my mouth, and let it slowly melt....and, there I am, walking down, by the mill, on a hot and sunny afternoon, heading down past the canefield, right by the church. Magic!
