Beachboy hasn't posted since day before yesterday. Maybe he finally checked into Queen's.

Oops, he posted yesterday about a bicycle race in France, whatever it's called. Never mind!

I hope he didn't actually have to be admitted although it would not surprise me if he was.

              Sounds quite nasty.

"Mother Nature's BANDAID"??? We routinely flush out debris and nasty fluids from wounds. To leave them in there provides a happy breeding ground for more organisms. We also debride wounds, removing dead tissue, for the same reason. Not with a garden hose of course---we kinda like the sterile equipment/sterile fluid method.

And what makes you so very sure this is "staph"? Was the wound ever cultured to make sure you're getting the right antibiotic? It might be some other nasty bug that is totally resistant to the antibiotics you are taking.

It sends up a red flag when you say the doc wanted to have it x-rayed---this makes me think osteomyelitis, an infection that has gone to the bone. Very difficult to treat----weeks of IV antibiotics (now do-able at home, BTW, if your insurance will pay for it).

A suggestion? Take a ride over to the Queen's ER. See what they have to say about it. A friend of my husband's was viciously attacked by a tree branch while doing yard work and was being treated by his private doc. The wound was horrible---arm was puffy, red, and the wound was full of pus. His private doc had given him oral antibiotics and a cream. The friend went over to Queens, where they lanced the mess, flushed out all the garbage, gave him a dose of IV antibiotics in the ER, and sent him home with a different oral antibiotic and an appointment for follow-up.

He's fine now, but I don't know what might have happened if he had continued that course of treatment his private doc prescribed.

Not to terrify you or anything but this could lead to amputation or worse. Really.
Monday first thing in the morning I'm gonna call and make an appt. with an "Infectious Diease Specialist" attached to Straub, Dr. Pien I believe his name is? Anyway, I'll do it.

What has me worried, but not to worried is how this type of infection is acting on my leg. I have never run a fever with this infection, I find that rather strange, nor do I feel anything in my lymph glands whatsoever...not a bit of soreness? Cases of Staph that I've had in the past that I deemed serious all came included fevers & tender lymph glands.
I will say I have thrown caution to the wind in the sense I'm not gonna listen to my doctor concerning these wounds. Of course I went and purchased sterile gauze pads large & small, a few bottles of H. peroxcide, band-aids, sterile gauze wrap, 100% Tea Tree Oil, and 3 in one antibiotic ointment. I also doing Warm to Hot Epsom Salt wraps daily too. But I have a concern, some of my skin is becoming quite tender. I'm not sure if it's from constant bathing the infected pukas with H. Peroxcide or from Epsom Salt wraps, or both...or perhaps the staph infection itself? Cause it's become pretty tender...but no fever yet!

I have to look at thing logically. Hey MadAzza, some mothers run their kids to the doctors for a running nose? I was raised differently though. It comes with the territory( income, insurance, etc, etc.)! Sure, I'm a bit concerned about my leg. But I see no red lines running up it. Like I said, I have neither fever nor sore lymph glands at this time. Just some coral cuts that aren't healing at a robust rate for some reason? But giving the current events of the Ala Wai a few months back...and the dumping of raw sewage there has me worried that I could have some mutant strain of staph born out of resistence to antibiotics and whatever else.

I'm so glad to see you posting here, Beachboy!

Also glad to see that you'll be seeing a specialist. I haven't worked with Francis Pien much but I know he is well regarded.

I think the wet wraps may be macerating your skin a bit. Or, as you said, it may be from the infection itself.

Good luck with this---thank you for letting us know what's happening....

Raised differently from what? In your first post in this thread, you mention having a supposed staph infection, a possible flesh-eating infection, a lot of pus and several ineffective courses of antibiotics. You also mentioned already having gone to a doctor. You then asked for "home remedies" for staph.

Pardon me for assuming you were concerned about it enough to seek medical help. What was I thinking?

Just put a Band-Aid on it.

I was wondering if your fingers fell off due to your lack of posts recently... just kidding.

Seriously dude... listen to the Doctor... I live next to the Ala Wai and within the last year some one has died from this type of stuff after he fell/got pushed into the water, got infected...failed to tell the doctor that he was in polluted water, then went home and the thing got worse...and as I said...he ended up dieing.

                        Also not to scare you...

                        Hope you get better soon...

It's why there is such high rates of colon cancer and testicular cancer is the initial shame of going in...

finances play a big role in health care in Hawaii. Growing up on Maui, I had no health care! Nor did half the population back in the late 60's, early 70's.
A lot of families in my neighborhood would have to have their family memeber really ill before going to Maui Memorial...again no health care...that's how some of us are raised dfferently "MadAzza". The haves, and the have-nots is an easier way to put it.

listen, I'm not asking you for motherly advice here. Again I will try to stress to you that different people have different situations in their lives that require them to go about things differently than you or most of main stream America would. In a Perfect World we would all have an medical cures at the snap of a finger, and nobody would suffer from any ailment, or from lack of health care!

Let me put it anyway for you. I am concerned about my foot, but it is not my main focal point right now. Well, that's not totally true though. I have stopped working for the time being. It's not because of the staph pukas ,but the swelling in my foot. In the past I have gone in the water with staph infections to clean out that yellow pus better. It does a better job cleaning out the pukas than I would do had I used peroxcide, gauze, and antibiotic cream. outset of the infection I asked about home remedies because in my travels(twice around world )for surfing. Most countries are full of home remedies for one thing or another....so I asked. Do you have a problem with Home remedies? In 1978 in Indonesia I got a terrible laceration over my left thumb. I sewed my thumb closed with several stiches. I used a "coconut husk" to sew my thumb closed...a home remedy. Is there a problem with that in your eyes? Hawaiians also have a lot of good home remedies too. Keep in mind, modern medicine is only one avenue to recovery.

                              .
Beachboy, you're 100% correct about the cost of healthcare being a problem for lots of people, and not just in Hawai'i. There are millions of people who are gainfully employed who don't have health care insurance. People who get health care benefits where they work should count their lucky stars. Even though they have to pay some money out of their own pockets, I doubt they realize that their employers probably pay about 2/3 more to make sure that employee has health coverage. What's sad is, people in the US pay more for their health care per capita than anyone else in the world, and yet our health outcome is only about 9th in the world!

One good thing, Beachboy, is that Hawai'i is pretty advanced when it comes to health coverage for its citizens. Have you looked into Med-Quest? That program was put in place to make sure that people of Hawai'i who didn't qualify for employee health insurance could at least have some protection. The catch is if the limit of people covered is reached in a year, you can't qualify. But at least look into it.

I'm trying to work towards the day when no one has to be put in the situation of being unable to get healthcare, especially when they are ill.
